The McFILEMASTER utility is specifically intended for users who need
greater control over the files on their PC's than is available with
traditional DOS computing. Particularly for those who need to
reliably transfer data between offices, office to home, at their
convenience. Consequently, one major benefit of the McFILEMASTER
utility is the flexibility it provides for individuals who work at
both home and office. These individuals with the help of
McFILEMASTER, can plan ahead to work at home, at their convenience.
Ease of use is another benefit of McFILEMASTER. The McFILEMASTER
user interface facilitates file control for even the non-technical
personal computer user. Through its relatively simple format and
its clear labeling of desired operations, the McFILEMASTER utility
gives users greater control over their personal computer files
without them having to have an in-depth knowledge of DOS commands.

This manual tells you what you need to know to use the software you
received with McFILEMASTER.
Before you can start using the software, you should have set-up your
computer (plugging it into a power source, attaching the keyboard
and mouse, and connecting any peripheral devices, such as printers).
If you haven't set-up your computer, do so now. If you have other
devices to attach to your computer, turn to the manuals that came
with those devices for instructions on connecting them correctly.
Also, be sure to look through the manuals that came with the appli-
cation programs you'll be using with your computer.
About this manual
This guide is designed to focus on a specific topic. The idea is to
help you locate exactly what you need quickly, without having to
conduct a lengthy search when you have a question.
Here's what you'll find inside:
Part I-1 is an overview of the McFILEMASTER Installation, it
identifies the tasks that must be executed to install McFILEMASTER
correctly.
Part F-1, File Services, allows the user the ability to sort
through files by Time/Date Specifications, and other file
Attribute Specifications.
Part S-1, System Info, allows the user to verify certain system
features used in the File Services operations.

INTRODUCTION
Welcome to McFILEMASTER and the facility it provides for MS-DOS or
PC-DOS computing. McFILEMASTER is a PC or MS-DOS User Interface
utility that allows users greater control over the files residing
on their PC's than does the conventional DOS Operating System, or
many other utility packages.
The SEARCH, COPY, and DELETE facilities allow for selection of
specific files on the basis of certain attribute and time charac-
teristics which files inherit as a consequence of their creation.
McFILEMASTER will copy needed files (as designated by the user)
safely and accurately between machine's giving the user the
ability to choose between working venues. For example, one
directive issued at the office through McFILEMASTER, would copy
all files created or updated on a particular day to a user desig-
nated floppy drive (A: or B: etc.). This directive would ensure
an individual having all the files necessary to complete tasks at
home. With McFILEMASTER, the operator is given the opportunity to
define more explicitly the files to SEARCH for, COPY, and DELETE.
Typical DOS operating System commands, or those provided by many
other utilities do not allow for the same type of specificity.
The features provided for by McFILEMASTER would be particularly
desirable for anyone in either technical or nontechnical industry,
where using the personal computer has become routine; and the need
for reliably transferring work between machines is commonplace.
Other functions of the McFILEMASTER utility, and step-by-step in-
structions on their use, are described in more detail in this
manual.
FUNCTIONS
FILE SERVICES
The FILE SERVICES Main Menu choice allows for greater file control
than is available by other conventional means. This is accom-
plished by giving the user the ability to sort through files by
Time/Date Specifications and other file Attribute Specifications.
The entire PC drive can be searched for files which were created
or updated on a particular date or period (Time Specifications can
include files created or updated before or after a particular date
as well as during a certain period). The file selection process
can be sorted according to filename parameter, or according to
file type (e.g., a System File, a Hidden File, a Read-Only File,
a Directory, or any combination of these). Files can equally be
copied or deleted according to user defined parameters. A typical
directive might involve the copying of all 'c' language files
('*.c') created either today or yesterday to drive A:.
viii
The user can specify this command to be applied to a single direc-
tory or all subdirectories. In this manner the whole disk can be
acted upon.
The LAST CHOICE option allows for the last FILE SERVICES operation
to be recalled, saving the user the tedium of retyping the needed
information.
SYSTEM INFO
The SYSTEM INFO Main Menu choice provided by McFILEMASTER allows
the user to verify certain system features used in the FILE
SERVICES operations. The TIME, DATE sub-menu selection provides
the system time and date. The amount of conventional and extended
memory is obtained through the MEMORY sub-menu selection. The DOS
version number is available through the DOS VERSION sub-menu
selection.
EQUIPMENT
The EQUIPMENT Main Menu choice allows for verification of machine
equipment with the MACHINE INFO sub-menu choice. The other sub-
menu selections allow the user to set the system time and date
that will be used in the FILE SERVICES operations.
ix
PART I-1
McFILEMASTER INSTALLATION
Requirements
McFILEMASTER(1) is designed to be run on hard disk systems with a
color monitor.
IBM(2) PC-XT, IBM PC-AT, or fully compatible computer with at
least one floppy drive and a hard disk.
MS or PC-DOS(3) operating system. Version 2.0 or above.
80 column color monitor. EGA(4) or VGA(5) preferred.
Copy your disks
Before you do anything else, make copies of the program disk to use
as your working disk. If you're not sure how to copy disks, refer
to any DOS manual for instruction. Then put the original away in a
safe place. If something goes wrong with the program disk, you'll
have the stored backup copy in reserve. It is important that you
keep the original program disk in its unaltered state.
Modifying 'AUTOEXEC.BAT'
NOTE: To run McFILEMASTER from all directories, the path statement
in the 'AUTOEXEC.BAT' file must be modified to include the drive
and directory where the system files resides. An example of a
typical path statement, located in the 'AUTOEXEC.BAT' file:
'Path=C:\;C:\BIN;C:\NEW'
A modified path statement for the previous example, if the drive and
directory where the McFILEMASTER system files were copied to were,
'C:\McFILE', might be:
'Path=C:\;C:\BIN;C:\NEW;C:\McFILE'
This modification can be done using EDLIN(6) or any other text
editor.
Directory Test
A directory test must be run before McFILEMASTER is used. Erroneous
results will occur if directory lengths are longer than the 66 char-
acter limit allowed by DOS. To run this test:

If a directory is in violation of the length limitation allowed by
DOS it will be detected by McFILEMASTER and must be removed by the
operator. These directory test steps must be repeated, (and the in-
valid directories removed) until no invalid directories remain. If
no invalid directories are found, McFILEMASTER is ready to be used.

SEARCH Options
The SEARCH options are:
1. System Files - Causes files that have a system attribute to be
sought during the SEARCH.
2. Hidden Files - Causes files that have a hidden attribute to be
sought during the SEARCH.
3. Read-Only Files - Causes files that have a read-only attribute
to be sought during the SEARCH.
4. List Subdirectories - Causes files that have a directory
attribute to be sought during the SEARCH. When this option is
selected the SEARCH is automatically conducted on all subdirec-
tories of the directory specified.
5. Time Specification - Causes files that have a time specification
to be selected during the SEARCH. The Time Specification option
will be discussed later.
6. None Of The Above - Indicates that the SEARCH will not include
any specific attribute, or time specification.
7. Include Subdirectories - Indicates that the SEARCH be conducted
on the selected directory and any subdirectories of this direc-
tory. A SEARCH starting from the Root Directory, with Include
Subdirectories selected, will search the whole drive.
8. Main Menu - Will return you to the Main Menu where any operation
can be selected.
9. Quit - Will exit the user from McFILEMASTER.
7
Moving the UP and DOWN arrow keys, or depressing the SPACE bar, will
highlight that option. Pressing the ENTER key while the selection
is highlighted will mark that choice with a check mark. To accept
the check marked choice, press the F1 key.
If a SEARCH option is not chosen and the F1 key is pressed, an error
message indicating that a SEARCH option is required will be display-
ed as in Figure F-4.

Figure F-4
Option Required Message
A combination of choices can be selected as SEARCH options, but some
combinations of choices may inherently yield unfruitful search cri-
teria. For example, a choice to SEARCH for System Files, while
List Subdirectories is also selected, will result in a No Files
Found Message. The List Subdirectories option and the System Files
option are mutually exclusive, the selection of one prohibits the
choice of the other being valid.
Time Specifications
Important: The choice of a time specification to be included in
the operation will bring up windows similar to those in the Time
Specification Screen, shown in Figure F-5.

Figure F-5
Time Specification Screen
8
The Time Specification option is available with the SEARCH, COPY,
or DELETE operations. The choice of the word 'time', in time spec-
ification, is used in a generic sense. The time specification
operations are performed on files that possess a particular date
stamp.
The upper window in Figure F-5, records the time choice. This selec-
tion will appear in the lower left hand corner. The selection in
Figure F-5 was '=4'.
The lower window in Figure F-5 reports the system date and time. The
system date and time can be changed with TIME(SET) and DATE(SET),
in the Main Menu option EQUIPMENT.
McFILEMASTER supports five different styles of time specifications:
1. Typing an equal sign followed by up to three digits (0-999).
For example, '=4', a SEARCH selection will be made. In Figure
F-5, with a system date of 02/06/92, and the SEARCH criteria
being '=4', files that are exactly four days old, or files with
a 02/02/92 date, are being sought. An '=0' choice would specify
files created or modified that day. Valid choices are numbers
0-999.
2. Typing a plus sign followed by up to three digits (0-999). For
example, '+4', an instruction to find all files from 4 days ago
up until today will be made. In Figure F-5, the system date
being 02/06/92, files to be found would be any files with a
02/02/92, 02/03/92, 02/04/92, 02/05/92, or 02/06/92 creation or
modification date. Valid choices are numbers 0-999.
3. To search for files with file dates SUBSEQUENT to a calendar
date, such as March 29, 1990, the format would be '>03/29/90'.
Files found would be any with a date subsequent to 03/29/90.
4. To search for files with file dates PRIOR TO a calendar date,
such as March 29,1990, the format would be '<03/29/90'. Files
found would be any with a date prior to 03/29/90.
5. To search for files with file dates BETWEEN calendar dates, for
example, to find all files created or modified in the month of
April, 1992, the correct time specification would be '03/31/92-
05/01/92.'
Note: This format was selected because the files sought are
dated between the last day in March (03/31/92), and the first
day in May 1992 (05/01/92). A SEARCH specification of '04/01/92
-04/31/92' would lead to erroneous results since files created
or modified on the first or last day of March are omitted
because they do not fall between these dates.
6. A final choice would be to press the ENTER key without making a
selection. This will allow you to exit from the Time Specifica-
tion Screen without making any time specification.
9
The format of the time specification entry provides for some
flexibility. For example to find files greater than January 15,
1992 the corresponding entries might be '>01/15/92', or '>1/15/92',
or '>1/15/1992', all of these entries will select files subsequent
to January 15, 1992. Failure to adhere to this format will invoke
an error. See Figure F-6.

Calendar Date Criteria
Choices that include a calendar date must conform to these condi-
tions:
1. All calendar dates must be later than 12/31/79. An error
message, similar to Figure F-7, will be displayed on your screen
if the selected date is before 01/01/80.

2. The dates specified cannot be later than the system date report-
ed in the window below the Time Specifications Screen, Figure

tem date, an error message, similar to Figure F-8, will be dis-
played on your screen.

4. All calendar dates must be valid dates. For example, a date
of 02/30/91 would be invalid since there are only 28 days in
February, 29 days in leap years. An error message, similar to
Figure F-10, will be displayed if the date is invalid.

able directories a screen at a time.) If more than one directory is
chosen a Single Directory Selection Required Message, similar to the
single drive selection required message reported in Figure F-13,
will be displayed, upon pressing any key to reselect, the Directory
Listing Screen is redisplayed. If the ESC key is pressed in re-
sponse to the Directory Listing Screen (after a message acknowledg-
ing that the ESC key was pressed) the user is returned to the
Directory Specification Screen to reselect, or ESC back further.
File Name Specification
The File Name Specification Screen, shown in Figure F-17, is common
to all FILE SERVICES options, SEARCH, COPY, and DELETE. Its purpose
is to allow the SEARCH, COPY, or DELETE operations to be performed
on a specific file, or by wild card specifications on all files,
'*.*', or on files with a pattern (perform operation on all files
with the .BAK extension, '*.BAK'). The '?' mark used with DOS file-
name specifications is also valid.

typed, and the ENTER or CARRIAGE RETURN key is pressed, is '*.*'.
Valid filenames are the same as allowed by DOS.
An additional option pressing the Tab bar will return the operator
to the Main Menu.
Choice Confirmation
The final screen displayed, after a file selection and all other
necessary information has been obtained, and before the start of the
operation itself, is the Choice Confirmation Screen. Figure F-18 is
a SEARCH Choice Confirmation Screen which displays an operation with
a time specification, to be performed on a single directory.

The options selected in Figure F-18, search the drive and directory
'C:\McFILE' for all files that are 4 days old, might yield an Output
Screen as in Figure F-20. The first line of the Choice Confirmation
Screen indicates the type of operation that was selected. The
second line reports the File Name to be operated on. The third line
indicates the drive and directory in which the operation is to be
launched. In this case it was 'C:\McFILE'.
The options selected for this operation are listed in the subsequent
lines. A Time Specification of '=4' was selected for all files in
the 'C:\McFILE' directory. The last line in the Choice Confirmation
Screen asks if these are the file names, directory, and the options
with which this operation is to be applied. If these are the cor-
rect parameters, and 'Y' is entered, the SEARCH operation is begun.
If an 'N' or any key other than 'Y' is pressed, the SEARCH operation
is aborted, and a screen similar to Figure F-19, will be displayed.
This screen verifies the incorrect selection and you will be return-
ed to the Main Menu.

Output Screen
The output in Figure F-20 is from a simple request to search for all
files ('*.*') created four days ago on drive C:, in the '\McFILE',
directory. Note: that Hidden files are included in the SEARCH
Output, and that the full path of the file is also given. Included
with the name and the path of the file, are the date and time of its
creation or modification, and the size of the file in bytes.
The power of the SEARCH facility, and to some extent the COPY and
DELETE operations, is the ability to scan the whole disk for a
combination of File Attributes and Time Specifications. If no files
were found for a requested operation a screen similar to Figure F-21
will alert you to this fact. Moreover, the NO MATCH FOUND Screen,
will display the operation that was selected, the file name and
directory that were acted upon, and the options that were selected
for that SEARCH. Pressing any key to continue will bring you back
to the Main Menu where the operation can be reselected.

This screen can be helpful in deciphering why an operation was not
successful. Perhaps the name of the file was incorrectly spelled,
subdirectories were omitted when they were meant to be included, or
invalid options were selected.
An additional option, pressing ESC to reselect, (after a message
acknowledging this choice) will redisplay the Choice Confirmation
Screen, which then allows the user to ESC back through the earlier
attribute screens and change the corresponding SEARCH parameters.
COPY
The McFILEMASTER COPY operation allows for greater control over
files, especially when transferring information between machines.
To select the COPY operation, highlight the FILE SERVICES menu op-
tion, refer to Figure F-1, Main Menu options, and press the ENTER
key. A sub-menu will appear on your screen, refer to Figure F-22.
Highlight the COPY option by using the UP or DOWN arrow keys, or by
depressing the SPACE bar, then press the ENTER key.

your selection. For example, press T for Time Attributes.
COPY Options
The COPY options are:
1. Time Attributes - Causes files with a Time Specification to be
selected during the COPY operation. The Time Attribute option
is identical to the Time Specification option discussed in the
SEARCH section.
2. No Attribute Choice - Indicates that the COPY operation will not
include a Time Specification.
3. Include Subdirectories - Indicates that the COPY operation will
be conducted on the selected directory and any subdirectories of
that directory.
4. Preview Files To Copy - Indicates that files which initially
meet Time or File Name specifications will be listed and then
can be further qualified to be copied or omitted.
5. Main Menu - Will return you to the Main Menu where any opera-
tion can be selected.
6. Quit - Will exit the user from McFILEMASTER.
A combination of the COPY options can be selected to give you great-
er control over your files. Choosing a Time Attribute of '=0', with
Subdirectories Included, and starting the operation from the Root
Directory '\', would effectively copy all files created or modified
that day to another user specified drive. A practical example of
this format would be to copy all files worked on today, on drive C:,
to a floppy drive, drive A:, where they can be taken and used on a
PC at home, or at another location.
If no copy options are chosen and the F1 key is pressed, an error
message indicating that a copy option is required will be displayed.
This Copy Option required message is similar to the Search Option
required message displayed in Figure F-4.
Note: The Search Section of this manual gives a more in depth over-
view of available options, directory screens, filename screens and
possible error messages. For further detail review this section.
Drive Specification
After making a selection from the Copy Options Screen, or the Time
Specification Screen, the next screen displayed, shown in Figure
F-24, will ask which drive to use to copy files from.
18
The Drive Specification Menu is similar to the other drive option
menus used in SEARCH and DELETE. The UP and DOWN arrow keys can be
used to select the drive, followed by pressing the ENTER key to flag
this choice, then pressing the F1 key to register the selection.
Selecting the first letter of the drive, will highlight that choice.

Pressing ENTER will flag this choice, multiple files can be selected
in this manner. Pressing the F1 key will accept all flagged files
as those to be copied. Note: Files with a total path and file name
length of over 75 characters can not be acted upon with the Preview
Option. To copy these files with the same selectability that the
Preview Option offers do not select Preview Files To Copy in the
Copy Options Screen, Figure F-23, rather, confirm the copy of each
individual file. See Figure F-33 and corresponding text. The limit
on the number of files to be previewed is 250. If the ESC key is
pressed while the files to copy are being previewed, no files will
be selected and after a message acknowledging that the ESC key was
pressed the user will return to the Main Menu.

One source of COPY errors, apart from those that are DOS related
COPY errors, are COPY errors resulting from the storage medium
itself, namely insufficient disk space. This error results simply
from the size of the file to be copied, being larger than the amount
24
of disk space available on the storage media where it is to be cop-
ied. The error message indicating insufficient disk space, is shown
in Figure F-35. Other errors such as a Bad Track, or Sector, Gen-
eral Failures etc., are reported by McFILEMASTER's critical error
handling routines.

Insufficient Disk Space Message
Files Not Copied
The Copy operation can register error messages that inform you that
a particular file could not be copied. These error messages are
displayed in the Output Screen and the Copy Log. These error mes-
sages are:
1. File marked Hidden, cannot be copied.
2 File marked Hidden and Read-Only, cannot be copied.
3. File marked System, cannot be copied.
4. File marked System and Hidden, cannot be copied.
5. File marked System and Read-Only, cannot be copied.
6. File marked System, Hidden, and Read-Only, cannot be copied.
The copy restrictions for these files are compatible with the re-
strictions imposed by DOS for file copy. You will be alerted to
the inability to copy certain files correctly or completely, by
messages in the Output Screen while the copy operation is being
performed and in the log file, 'COPY_LOG.McF'. This log is written
when a copy operation is attempted.
Insufficient Disk Space
As mentioned previously insufficient disk space will also result
in copy errors. An explanation of insufficient disk space and how
McFILEMASTER handles disk copying is explained below.
25
Before copying a file from one drive to another, the destination
disk is checked for available space. This figure is then compared
to the size of the file being copied. If the space available on the
destination disk is larger than the size of the file to be copied,
the copy operation proceeds. Calculation of the space available is
not solely formulated by using this method. It is also formulated
by checking for a file by the same name as the file to be copied.
When copying a file; for example, from 'C:\' to 'A:\', McFILEMASTER
checks to see if a file of that name already exists on the A: drive.
If it does, the calculation of space available is derived by adding
the size of the unused space on disk A:, plus the size of the file
that already resides on disk A:. If the aggregate space available
is larger than the file to be copied, the operation proceeds and the
file on drive A: is overwritten by the file on drive C:. For this
reason an Insufficient Disk Space Message can be seen on the Output
Screen, and will be written to the log file 'COPY_LOG.McF' a number
of times before the message in Figure F-35 is displayed on your
screen. Pressing any key to reselect will return the user to the
Main Menu.
As was described in the SEARCH operation, if a combination of At-
tribute, and File Name Specifications do not yield files that meet
this criteria, the NO MATCH FOUND Screen will be displayed. Refer
to Figure F-36.

Copy Log
If the COPY operation is selected, a log file is written to record
the files copied. The log file 'COPY_LOG.McF', will be written in
26
the directory from where the 'McFILEM' command was issued. If the
log file could not be created, a message will be displayed on your

File Creation Error Message
Although the log file creation error message is displayed on your
screen, as shown in Figure F-37, the copy operation itself will not
be affected. The COPY operation will continue as selected. The
significance of this message is that there will be no log file writ-
ten for the verification of this COPY procedure. A sample log file
is shown in Figure F-38. The first line of the file displays the
date and time that the COPY operation was started. This example was
selected because it highlights a combination of problems that can
occur when copying files: some files were copied, others were not
copied due to attribute restrictions( File marked System, Hidden,
and Read-Only, etc.) and others were not copied due to insufficient
disk space.

could not be written completely may include, a lack of space on the
disk that the log file was written to, or a combination of hardware
Input/Output errors.
Although the COPY operation is reliable, you would be advised to
check the directory where files were copied to. Especially in cases
where disk Input/Output produced error messages of the type, Sector
Not Found, Drive X Not Ready, Insufficient Disk Space, or other disk
related errors.
DELETE
The DELETE operation is similar to the SEARCH and COPY operations.
It includes a Time Specification option, a Preview Files to Delete
option, and the ability to include subdirectories in the delete
operation.
WARNING The inclusion of subdirectories makes the DELETE operation
both powerful and dangerous. Great care must be exercised in its
use because of its potential for destructiveness. For example, a
DELETE operation started from the Root Directory, with Subdirector-
ies Included, and using a '*.*' File Name Specification, would de-
lete all files on the disk. A warning message advises the user of
the possibility of lost files if the DELETE operation is not follow-
ed correctly.
To select the DELETE operation, highlight the menu option FILE
SERVICES, refer to Figure F-1, Main Menu Options, and press the
ENTER key. At this stage a sub-menu, refer to Figure F-40, will
appear on your screen. Highlight the DELETE option by using the UP
or DOWN arrow keys, or by depressing the SPACE bar, and pressing the
ENTER key (As described earlier, pressing the first letter of the
desired operation will also select that operation).

not include a Time Specification.
3. Include Subdirectories - Indicates that the DELETE operation
will be conducted on the selected directory, and any subdirec-
tories of that directory.
4. Preview Files To Delete - Indicates that files which meet the
original DELETE criteria will be listed and then each can be
selected to be deleted or omitted.
5. Main Menu - Returns you to the Main Menu, where any Main Menu

This information can be useful in verifying that the specifications
for the DELETE operation are valid. The requested File Name, as
well as the directories where the operation was to be performed,
can be checked for correctness.
Delete Log
A log file is created, similar to the COPY log file, when the DELETE
operation is performed. The log file 'DEL_LOG.McF' is written in
the directory where the McFILEM command was issued. In the event
that a log file could not be created, an error message will be dis-
played before the DELETE operation is started. Refer to Figure F-51.

to the COPY operation, when a log file could not be created, the
DELETE operation will continue as selected. The File Creation
Error Message indicates that the log file which is normally created
for verification will be missing. A sample log file is shown in
Figure F-52. The first line of the log file shows the date and time
that the DELETE operation was started. In this example, one file,
'BDUALDA1.BAT' was not deleted because the file was marked Read-
Only. The message, FILE NOT DELETED! ACCESS DENIED, is written to
the Output Screen and the log file, 'DEL_LOG.McF'.

LAST CHOICE
The LAST CHOICE selection allows the user to recall the last FILE
SERVICES operation. This selection will in effect restore the last
FILE SERVICES operation chosen, SEARCH, COPY, or DELETE with its
accompanying parameters. A demonstration of the utility of this
choice is highlighted in the case where a needed file resides on one
of a stack of floppy disk. The user might know the name of the file
or the date of its creation but not on which disk the file resides.
To find the file, the SEARCH, FILE SERVICES operation is chosen for
drive A:, and the required limits are selected. If this disk does
not contain the desired file, one of the other disks must be insert-
ed in drive A: and the procedure repeated until found. The LAST
CHOICE option, in this case, will allow the user to recall their
last command and eliminate the tedium associated with the repetitive
process of reselecting the identical SEARCH parameters. Likewise,
the LAST CHOICE option can be applied to the COPY and DELETE options
in a similar manner.
Note: Restrictions on the number of times an operation can be re-
peated by choosing the LAST CHOICE option, or the number of times
any of the FILE SERVICES operation is repeated, is a function of the
memory needed to service that choice. If the required memory is
insufficient, the program will be exited and a Memory Termination
Message will be displayed on your screen. The amount of available
machine memory is also a determining factor in this calculation.
Refer to Figure F-54.

LAST CHOICE Sub-Menu Option
The LAST CHOICE selection will invoke a Choice Confirmation Screen
(depending on the last FILE SERVICES operation chosen) similar to
those in Figures F-18, if SEARCH was the last FILE SERVICES opera-
tion, F-30, if COPY was the last FILE SERVICES operation, or F-46,
if DELETE was the last FILE SERVICES operation.
The LAST CHOICE option will apply the same drive and directory as
was selected in the original FILE SERVICES operation. For example,
if a previous SEARCH operation was chosen to search for files on
drive A:, in the '\NEW' directory, choosing the LAST CHOICE option
would register this same choice. In the case where a floppy or
removable disk drive is selected and this floppy disk has been re-
moved and replaced by another, the original directory (unless the
'\' ROOT directory is chosen) might not be available.
In the example given above where the user was searching a stack of
floppies for a particular file, lets assume it was known that this
file was located in a directory named '\MARCH'. The SEARCH parame-
ters reflecting this choice might be: search for the name of the
file on drive A:, staring from the '\MARCH' directory. If this com-
mand was given through the SEARCH, FILE SERVICES option and recalled
through the LAST CHOICE option, the results obtained will not always
be those which were desired. This is because as the different
floppy disks are used in this operation it would be highly unusual
for them all to have a directory named '\MARCH', as was selected in
the original SEARCH.
37
McFILEMASTER will look for this directory on the floppy that was
inserted into drive A:, and if found it will complete the operation
using this directory specification. If this directory is not found
on the floppy disk in drive A:, the operation will be applied to the
default directory found on drive A:. In this case the user will be
alerted to this by the Default Directory Message in Figure F-56.

Figure F-56
Default Directory Message
With this in mind choosing an operation that will be repeated with
the LAST CHOICE option can be somewhat confusing because default
directories will be used when the chosen directory is not found.
Starting all repeated operations from the '\' ROOT Directory will be
more reliable since all disk have a '\' ROOT Directory.
If the LAST CHOICE option is selected before a SEARCH, COPY or
DELETE option has been selected, the No Previous Selection Message

DATE (SET) Screen
The format for setting a date is very similar to that for setting a
time as described in the previous section. The month is entered
first, followed by a colon, slash, or hyphen, the day is entered
next, followed by another colon, slash or hyphen, then the year is
entered. For example a date of May 3, 1992 could be entered as
05:03:1992 or 5/3/92.

Invalid Format Message
An invalid format message might occur when a non-numeric entry is
used, or where the correct delimiter (a slash, colon, or hyphen) is
not used, refer to Figure E-10. You will be instructed to press any
key, which will return you to the DATE (SET) Screen, Figure E-9,
where a valid date format can be entered.
Another source of errors are invalid dates. For example, a date of
02-30-92 would be invalid since there are only 28 days in February,
29 days in leap years.

Invalid Date/Time Message
If the date entered is invalid, an Invalid Date/Time Message, Figure
E-11, will be displayed on your screen. You will be instructed to
press any key which will return you to the DATE (SET) Screen, Figure
E-9, where a valid date format can be entered. As with the TIME
(SET) option, if the DATE (SET) option was selected inadvertently,
or if the system time and date are correct and do not need changing,
pressing the ENTER key with the cursor in the left-most position,
will display the current time and date as shown in Figure S-3,
pressing any key to continue will return you to the Main Menu. If
the date entered is valid and in the correct format, verification of
this choice is also displayed on your screen. Refer to Figure S-3.
EXIT
The EXIT option can be selected by highlighting EXIT, and pressing
the ENTER key. You will be returned to the DOS prompt in the direc-
tory where McFILEMASTER was started. Refer to Figure E-12.
